WHEN YOUR IDENTITY HAS BEEN STOLEN

Most victims of identity theft spend hundreds of hours and sometimes years trying to rectify the negative credit rating that results from being a victim of identity theft. The good news is "you don't have to". If you follow the steps outlined in this article, your negative credit rating will be restored in most cases within ten days.

Follow the steps below and keep a detailed record and copies of all correspondence.

Step 1. Place a fraud alert on your credit reports to help prevent an identity thief from opening any more accounts in your name.

Step 2. Contact the toll-free number of any of the three major credit bureaus below and place a fraud alert on your credit report. You only need to contact one of the three companies to place an alert because the company you call is required by law to contact the others.

There are two types of fraud alerts: an initial alert and an extended alert.

An initial alert stays on your credit report for at least 90 days.

An extended alert stays on your credit report for seven years. You can have an extended alert placed on your credit report if you've been a victim of identity theft and you provide the consumer reporting agency with an identity theft police report and a notarized identity theft affadavit. In addition, the consumer reporting companies will remove your name from marketing lists for pre-screened credit offers for five years unless you ask them to put your name back on the list before then.

To place either of these alerts on your credit report, or to have them removed, you will be required to provide proof of:

1. Your social security number (either a copy of your ss card, a pay-stub, 1099 or w2 will suffice. You only need one.)

2. Your mailing address ( a utility bill, bank statement or a signed copy of a lease agreement will suffice. P.O. boxes are ok, it just needs to be your current mailing address.)

3. Your proof of identification in a picture I.D. format issued by a government entity (driver's license, state issued I.D.)
